Shadows over Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

I was away two weeks ago, and delayed my shipment of Shadows to arrive the week I got back. They actually turned up yesterday, as DHL required a VAT number. Of course, Pelgrane Press is not VAT registered, so I had to juggle things with ProFantasy.

They are beautifully printed and bound - even better than Trail, very sturdy, smythe-sewn with head and foot bands. The artwork glows with silver-screen light. The black end papers contrast effectively with the lurid cover.

But there's one great big bloody problem, and I can't release the damn books. In fact, I'm demanding a reprint. See if you can spot the problem.

There are no headers or page numbers on any even page.

Of course, they are present on both proofs, so the printer has acknowledge the error (though not as yet apologized). I always insist on hanging on to proofs instead of sending them back. I haven't paid any money up front. But what I have done is inconvenience some IPR customers who have pre-ordered their books and are expecting them this week. They will hear from me today.

Frak!

About the only reason why I didn't preorder SOF is because I went and bought those DE products that I lacked and wanted to get before the deadline. If I had, I'd be even more pissed.

As it is, all I can offer is sympathy and moral strength to lend in the fight to get this fixed.

Thank you. In the well of moral turpitude, moral strength can only help.

Indeed. Or cheapish-perk added to MCB purchase to make package deal?

I've printed as many books as I think I can sell. I suspect releasing these versions would undermine that.

I kind of like that idea, Viktor, but it depends on whether Simon would go for it.

Oh, geez, Simon, that is rough! :( I hope that this problem gets resolved with as little stress and the like as possible, but now see (as [info]heliograph pointed out) a Convention Special! It's certainly a...unique version of the book! :)

Btw, was this the same publisher that did up Mutant City Blues?

It was the same printer, yes.

That is so weird, Simon. I know that accidents can happen between the proofing and the publishing, but still... Just glad this didn't happen with MCB, and it means you folks will have to be a bit more watchful on orders with that printer for a while, if you decide to stick with them.

What about the letter "a?" Is it present in these copies, even in sidebars?

Oh, they fixed the letter A all right. It's good and fixed.

I suspect the only way to mollify those of us who preordered is...ummm..draft PDFs of the Esoterrorists Factbook.....:)

My sympathies... it got you one more sale, though. I'd forgotten that I wanted to get it when I had some money (which I happen to have today). The pdf is now in my clutches, and I can wait for the hardbound.

What happens to misprinted books?

So if you can't distribute these (for various reasons including those mentioned above), what happens to them? This is more out of curiosity about the publishing industry than desire to own one (though that would be nice too)

They are usually collected by the printer to prevent sale.

Some printers want them back. Some just want the covers back. Some just politely ask you to pulp them (ie toss them in a dumpster or recycle them). In olden days you'd drill through hardcovers that you'd remainder, but I dunno if anybody does that anymore. The (understood) agreement if you're having them reprint the run is that you won't sell them.

This kind of printing problem would only appeal to a certain kind of nerd. I've got a copy of Lands of Mystery that includes some mystifying printing errors that I'm very fond of.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Yeah, misprinted books are not really something I'm interested in collecting unless it's something entertaining or important (Like the missing first page of The Bible: "To my dearest Abigail, the characters in this story are entirely fictitious...").

That a scribe is writing to someone named Abigail in 600 BC Babylon would be even weirder...

That really is annoying and bad news.
Just finished reading through my copy and was looking forward to seeing the finished book.

(And then I can start reading my hardback of Mutant City Blues which finally turned up at my local gaming store last week, the distributor having under ordered *again*).
