Reviews
Here is a review for Trail of Cthulhu.

"If you are intrigued with the genre, pick it up. If it doesn't give you new ideas and new enthusiasm, read it again."
And another here for Esoterrorists. I'm sure Robin must be blushing at the quote.
"The best Mystery/Investigative RPG ever"

Also, The Game's the Thing podcast covers Esterrorists in their latest issue. It can be found here. The Eso bit starts at about 26.50, and describes actual play.

"They hit it."

"It felt very natural"

A truly brilliant work. I'll definately be playing it in the near future.

Where to start?

I'd heard about the GUMSHOE system before, but listening to the most recent TGtT podcast has made me want to invest in it. The big "everything-but-cthulhu" bundle at IPR is out of stock, and I'm wondering which book is the best starting place for an introduction to the system? Fear Itself or Trail of Cthulhu are more appealing as a setting, but is there good/better advice to be found in the original Esoterrorists book?

That's a tricky question. If you want the PCs to be highly competent investigators, go for Eso. It's also good is you want to play police procedural or Torchwood-style games. Fear Itself has more character hooks and fewer investigative skills; it's for literary or slasher horror where the PCs are out of their depth. They both feature insanity rules. I'd say the easiest way to decide is to download the character sheets for each game.

Trail is big, Lovecraft-oriented and has a lot more to take in, so not the best place for a quick start.
