Floorplans
The latest feature in City Designer 3. You select one (or more) buildings, a number of floors, and it creates floorplans with outlines and floors, all neatly linked back to the main map and to each other.

You guys are really raising the bar with this one, not that you didn't already have it set amazingly high.

I have Peter Olsson for these new features. He is a super-fast programmer. I have loads more ideas, but I don't know how many we'll get in. Ideally I'd like to generalise this floorplan creator to an Atlas maker. (Click on a city - start a city map)

So, I see a lot of images of your fantasy stuff through your journal and website and it looks pretty hot: anti-aliased, neat textures, sexyness.

But the modern stuff I've seen has looked sort of... i don't know; dated? Un-shaded? Limited in color palette?

Can you talk about the modern-era stuff in your catalog a bit? I keep thinking about picking up Cartographer, but I'm definitely interested in modern (20th & 21st Century) or even far future floorplans, and I'm not sure if the same level of support is there...

We've been going through all our add-ons, starting with the fantasy stuff (by far the most popular) and adding raster graphics to complement the vector graphics (the stuff I think you are talking about)

Next year we should get SS3 (Modern) updated, and Cosmographer. There'll be some support for modern cities in City Designer 3, too.

Okay, that has to be one of the coolest features yet. I am really excited about CD3. Now, to get off my butt and start mapping!

Oh, and Happy Holidays to everyone at ProFantasy!

This is pretty much the coolest idea anyone has ever had in the history of cool ideas.

Well, thank you. We are also hoping to add something which lets you link to a copy pre-designed completed floorplan.

That would also be incredibly cool.

The only other exceptionally cool thing I'd like from Profantasy is for PDF starters to be included with new software. I've got to tell you- the PDF "Mapping Guides" that come with every issue of the Annual are excellent jumping off points, and more than anything you guys have ever done, those bite-size packets of info have propelled my cartography forward. What I LOVE about them is that they indtroduce the key concepts of the product and give you a "hands-on" guide to using those tools to create something. Following by the numbers, I can get a feel for the product and, as I get more comfortable with it, I can take the training wheels off and go at it on my own... but in the beginning, those training wheels are so incredibly helpful.

I only mention this because there's a real difference between when I download a new Annual and when I purchase a new product or symbol set. A new Profantasy product can be overwhelming at the beginning because, though the UI is 110% more intuitive than it was in 1998 (with Campaign Mapper, for instance), there are still so many options and the starting point is often a little ambiguous (at least to me). As a result, my new products often get installed and then sort of left alone, whereas I tear into the Annuals with fervor.

I know everybody works super hard over there to create all the excellent programming we love to use, and that there are limited resources to devote to such things (and that someone is reworking a Tome of Ultimate Mapping), but I love those bite-sized starters are so much, I really wanted to let you know how cool I think they are. They've really done incredible things for me.

That's my 2.5 cents. I'm very excited about CD3!!!
